Sticks & Stones

Words can hurt. They can do lots of damage. Words can heal. They can bring life & restoration. I don’t think that we are careful with our words, in general, as a society. The sad thing is that it takes more positive remarks to outweigh one negative remark. The Bible has a lot to say about our words….

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21
I get sloppy in my communication & don’t measure my words. I don’t consider what they will do to the person receiving them sometimes. I don’t even consider that I allow other’s words to hurt those I love. I have this “bubble” mentality sometimes & deceive myself into thinking that “sticks & stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That’s the craziest rhyme I’ve ever repeated or even believed!

If you go here & type in the word tongue, you’ll be surprised at how much there is on the subject!

The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18
keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies. Psalm 34:13
Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues. Proverbs 10:19
The tongue of the righteous is choice silver…..From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom Proverbs 10:20,31
The book of James has a lot to say about the tongue. We could learn so much here that would be truly healing for our relationships!
Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. James 1:26
Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. James 3:5-9

  1. Goodness, I agree completely and I have written about the power of words before, how a simple statement has the pwoer to amke or break someone's day, to make them smile, ruin their self confidence, make them feel good, hurt them. And so many people just don't get it sometimes. Words, spoken or written, are things we have to be careful with.
