What’s The Hardest Thing You’ve Ever Done?

I used to say homeschooling.  Which is still the answer, but with a tie for first is also being a step momma.  When asked how many children we have, my husband & I always answer, “four.”  People always want to press us for more.  They will say, yes but, which are yours?  They know we’re a blended family & that we are both step parents.  It used to really bother me, but it is ok to explain to them where we are & how we feel.

I spent most of the day Friday alone with our youngest who also happens to be my step daughter.   It was good.  I always enjoy it.  It’s a chance for us to connect even more & build our relationship.

Recently, she won 2 ribbons at the 4-H Fair (Champion & Reserve Grand Champion!)  This was a result of time she & I spent together.  I taught her to crochet.  We joined 4-H & went to meetings together.  She entered her crochet project & viola, won ribbons.  During the process she had to sew.  So now, we’ll be adding another hobby to our list of things to do together.  I’m so thankful my husband encouraged me to make this happen, because I had actually resigned to the fact that it would never work given our limited time with them.  (She is pictured here with her bag & her ribbons).

I love all of our children so very much.  I understand that I didn’t give birth to all of them.  I understand that I can love them the way Christ love’s me.  Speaking of whom, also understands the blended family.  He was a step child!  What a revelation this was for me.  He understands.  Joseph was not his father, physically anyway.  He wasn’t his “blood” father.  But, he was his dad.  If you know first hand what I’m talking about you completely understand all the dynamics that go along with all that the term blended family holds.  If you haven’t, I encourage you to love before judging.  Thank God that it’s not you.  Because if it weren’t for His grace it would be you walking in those shoes.  Come along side those families that you know are blended & encourage them.  Love them.

The flowers are from Abby to me.  She often picks them for me & I never tire of receiving them!

  1. What a beautiful post! How lucky that your youngest has you for a step Momma. She will always have those memories and the gift of knowing how to crochet. What a blessing you are to one another.

I thank you Michelle for your prayers….and your sweet comment on my blog. I am thankful for your support!

  2. I'd never thought about Jesus being adopted before. Neat! They say blended families take 7 whole years to meld. I guess that is a pretty vague generalization. Sounds like your family is an exception to that rule. Great post!
